The FDA and G. D. Seale had some kind of as yet unclarified agreement, which sealed the teratology studies on birth defects caused by aspartame. Thus, no pregnancy warnings were added to aspartame products, even though it was well known to cause severe defects, like neural tube defects, spina bifida and cleft palate, perhaps due to the fact that it is metabolized as formaldehyde.
Indeed, what defense does a developing fetus have against the corporate-sponsored ravages of formaldehyde in their RNA, plus the obvious neurodegenerative effects of the proven brain tumor causing agent, diketopiperazine.
In fact, autism has risen 2500% since aspartame was approved, but researchers, the FDA and of course the corporations either act dumb, blame it on something else, or say give us more money for research and we will hand you back a humdinger.
