Such upheavals have always been bloody and have affected populations drastically. Plagues and famines are natural accompaniments to these super-conflicts. The break-even point, that essential economic pivot at which any enterprise's fate is a foregone conclusion, is shifting. It has moved from the industry level some time ago, perhaps around the "dotcom bubble," to the enterprise level where businesses rise and fall. It is shifting now from the enterprise level to the individual level, where human beings, you and I, live or perish from hunger and disease and exposure, if not open warfare.

Why warn people? Who can be sure of anything? And what could possibly be done, even if Fox and CNN and Al-Jazeera broadcast this story far and wide for a year? While individual humans can indeed affect fast events through the use of enormous military and economic forces at their personal disposal, it is a lot more complicated to adjust to the forces thus unleashed. Think of an avalanche. Anybody can start a big one just by sneezing at the wrong place and time; but once it breaks loose, it is going to happen the way it must.

If my analysis is more than completely parenoid and irrelevant, the best anybody can do at this point is try to get out of the way.

These days I spend a lot of time hoping I'm wrong. I truly wish some credible evidence would surface that we are not headed over a cliff. So far, the arguments for this are as full of holes as Swiss Cheese.

I'm an old Pogo fan. For some unknown reason I persist in outrage at Feudalism, as if human beings can do much better than this. Our old ways of life are obsolete and are killing us. Will the human race wake up in time? Stay (more...)
