If that happens, Trump may have bitten off more than he can chew. Why?
Traditionally in the US, a president who presides during an economic dislocation is the one who is blamed. In addition, the Congress of his party takes a hit in the next off-year election.
Trump may have a free hand now particularly with the Democrats in the wilderness with no real power to stop him. Even Republicans who disagree with him on his tariff binge are too afraid to take him on for fear they'll be targeted by him.
So for now it's time to batten down the hatches before the hurricane. In this case Trump and his arcane measures are the hurricane about to hit the people square in their pocketbook.
And that, my friends, could be Trump's "Waterloo" come November, 2026.
