"Submerged in reality, the oppressed cannot perceive clearly
the "order " which serves the interests of the oppressors
whose image they have internalized. Chafing under the restrictions of this
order, they often manifest a type of horizontal violence, striking out at their
own comrades for the pettiest reasons.
When we are blind, we
stumble. When we are blind we do not see the possibilities. When we are blinded
by the needs of the moment we do not see the options to rise above the system
that keeps us under the powers that be. When we are blind we do not see the
choices we can make.
Freire,
who suggests that the oppressed must free themselves from oppression,
that it cannot be done for them, points out, "Only
as they discover themselves to be hosts of the oppressor can they contribute to
the midwifery of their liberating pedagogy."
My hope is that we are awakening, opening our
eyes to begin to see how we are all connected, seeing the ways we can become
the midwives to liberate ourselves and our world from a system that has gone
out of control-- that is controlled by oppressors who don't even want us to be aware that we are oppressed.
