CCR maintains Ecuador has appropriately offered protection for a journalist and publisher who continues to face persecution from the U.S. government. After all, there is a wide-ranging national security investigation into WikiLeaks, which includes an empaneled grand jury.

Google search warrants against WikiLeaks staffers have confirmed the government is investigating a media organization for Espionage Act, Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), a larceny statute and a "conspiracy to commit offense or to defraud the United States" statute. It is a troubling and ongoing assault on press freedom.

President Barack Obama administration's "relentless pursuit of whistleblowers," as well as the U.S. Army's crackdown on Chelsea Manning for having LGBTQ and political reading materials, including the Senate intelligence committee report on CIA torture, is further evidence that Ecuador is right to take a stand.

WikiLeaks attorneys believe the U.K. will try to arrest Assange if the Swedish case goes away completely.

Such sustained protest is a display of contempt for the institution of asylum and especially disturbing given the fact that the person being targeted is the head of a media organization.
