And yes we were frightened too, and justifiably so. They lowered their guns on us and have maintained that threat ever since. They began filling and building more prisons, allowing them to become literal hell-holes of brutality and depravity, and slyly let us know we could end up there if we misbehave too much. They took away the guaranteed safety net and appropriated a monopoly on everything we and our babies need to survive, and now they allow families, veterans, the injured and mentally ill, and anyone else who can’t or won’t play the game to suffer openly in homeless, hopeless privation while they lord their riches over them and tell them it is their own fault. They have convinced us they will allow our babies to starve right in front of us if we don’t play their game. "They" did; we allowed.
And so they are heartless human beings. And my primary feeling for them is pity and compassion, for nothing material can make up for the excruciating pain of spiritual emptiness.
But, in civic life, I feel I must call them out for what they really are: hypocritical exploiters; narcissistic thieves; slick manipulators; destroyers of those they claim to save; traitors to the cause they once championed and knew (and I am convinced still know) is just and right.
Let’s go back to 1972. Should Democrats have nominated a pro-war, race-baiting, social conservative to win the election, prolong the war they so vehemently opposed, and roll back the equality they fought so hard for? Does anyone really think that?
Did Reagan really win in 1980 because he appealed more to white working class Democrats or because he was running against the party in power in a very bad year for America (stagflation (part I), Iranian hostage crisis, spiking energy prices) and because the Democrats were divided both before and after the hotly fought 1980 primary and convention?
Did Bill Clinton’s 43% in 1992 really come out of the middle, when he was running against Perot (19%) and Bush (38%), both to his right? Was welfare-ending, NAFTA pushing, WTO and China advancing, job off-shoring, globalizing, financial industry and telecommunications deregulating, stock-market bubble-stoking, first black President Bill Clinton really an Appalachian white working class hero?
Did Al Gore run as a wild lefty? Didn’t he lose millions of votes to Nader on his left? Did Al Gore even lose the flippin’ election?
Did John Kerry run as a wild lefty? Didn’t the Democratic bosses and the media chase the moderate but populist-preaching Howard Dean from the race, leaving us with Mr. Electable? Didn’t Kerry run as a centrist, war hero, duck-huntin’, terrorist killin’, Iraq-war hawk?
Its all crap.
The Clinton’s and their enablers and the guy in the Lexus are all in it for the same thing: money. Their lord and savior. Amen
