He did start me thinking, though.
When it comes to the folks around the Twin Cities, as a group they are collectively brain dead.
Sure, they don't worry about al Qaeda, or gangs, or drugs, or even basic everyday crime like robbery and violence.
Too many of my neighbors have been programmed to buy the lie that whomever is running under that GOP umbrella is morally superior to any opponent, be it Democratic or Independent, because Jesus is the official God sponsor of the Republican Party.
They pay no attention to voting records of Republicans in office; personal behavior is even less of a concern. There is but one newspaper in the region, and its editors make sure all Democrats are either portrayed as bad or get as little press as possible, while Republicans are given copious print space with nary a disparaging word.
The good folks around these parts are so full of themselves being good folks it has flown right by them that they really aren't all that good. When all you concern yourself with is the status quo, and vote without paying any attention to whom or what you're actually voting for, then you cause your own democratic society to take a major downturn.
When you allow your community and county to run election after election with nothing but Republican candidates on the local ballots from U.S. Representative on down, you are putting a stranglehold on the entire concept of free and open elections.
I've lived here since 1995, and it wasn't until 2004 that the neighboring district had a Democratic candidate for Congress (Dr. David Gill); this is the first time we'll have a Dem in our district (John Pavich).
We have absolutely no choice for Democratic or Independent representation at the state or local levels.
"No Taxation Without Representation!" was one of the rallying cries upon which our Nation was founded... I'd go toss a buttload of tea into Lake Bloomington if I didn't think the local constabulary would arrest me.
Basically, around here as long as those in power aren't dirty, stinking, Godless, Liberal Democrats - especially that soulless Hillary, flip-floppin' John Kerry, and Crazy Al Gore - and they've got enough money to keep leasing their soccer-mom status symbol garishly chromed SUVs, the locals will keep voting Republican.
Praise the Lord.
With the exception of a very few friends and relatives, whom I can count on less than both hands, the people I consider loved ones are not afraid of an attack from al Qaeda. They're smarter than that.
What concerns us is a combination of the Fascists in control of all our governmental agencies, and the religious extremists who have united into the most dangerous voting bloc in U.S. history.
