JB: All good questions. Was Congress correct in giving him a hard time? What came out of that session?
MC: Congress didn't give Director Comey a hard enough time considering what was at stake. After all, he's allowed an outright criminal to run for president. Unfortunately, the grilling was on partisan lines. The Democrats on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee were loyal apologists for the candidate who destroyed Libya and Syria. The Republicans are largely artless in their questioning. Informed people saw this as a nonevent since the deal was sealed well before the investigation even began.
In 2007, I wrote about Comey's appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee: Michael Collins: Comey's Evidence Of A Crime, May 18, 2007. Members of the committee questioned Comey about an extraordinary incident when he was acting Attorney General in 2007. Attorney General John Ashcroft was to undergo surgery with full anesthesia and appointed Comey interim AG.. Alberto Gonzalez and Andy Card, then on the Bush White House staff tried to strong arm Comey into authorizing an unspecified activity that Comey believed to be illegal. He refused and Gonzalez and Card rushed to George Washington Hospital in DC where they hoped to rouse Ashcroft from his post operative slumber to move his hand across the signature line. Comey figured out what Card and Gonzales were up to, jumped in his car, and arrived at the hospital to find the two Bush mandarins in the midst of their evil plot to take advantage of a barely conscious, sick man. I won't ruin the ending, which is here. Comey stood tall that day and knows how to do it. I don't know why he backed down this time.
JB: Irresistible pressure from above? What's behind that "impromptu" get together of Bill Clinton and AG Loretta Lynch? Bill Clinton may be many things but he is a very smart man. Did he do something incredibly stupid or was it devilishly clever?
MC: The answer to this is found in my first answer to your first question: Do they really think we're stupid enough to buy this?
To believe that there was nothing improper going on at that meeting, we would have to believe the following:
The two planes just happened to be at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport that day.
The Lynch and Clinton planes just happened to be delayed at the same time;
Both Lynch and Clinton had temporary amnesia and forgot what everybody knows, namely that any meeting would have the very conspicuous appearance of impropriety.
