Boots are needed when one goes to war or undertakes a difficult project. How we--the rich--misuse and abuse the environment with plastic refuse is just a little front in the war we started... and the climate gods are winning.
In these wars the poor suffer most, while we rich, wearing comfortable sandals, cushy Nikes, or protective boots, load shopping carts with soon-to-be trash--that the poor or ocean gyres and fish will soon be left to sort.
If we can't win the battle for the hearts and minds of comfortable Americans in well-stocked stores, how will we win the battle against the climate gods who are devastating millions with fires, floods, droughts, hurricanes, etc.?
Have you ever wondered if we had a million Americans a year doing national service, at home and abroad, addressing needs like those expressed here, would the world be safer and more sustainable?
I have.
And some of us have written a congressional proposal that would help do so.
If you would like to know how our proposal would make a dramatic difference in the world, try googling People's Lobby's American World Service Corps Congressional Proposal and Joint U.S.-Russian Peace Corps. Let your elected reps know your thoughts.
Implementing both proposals would take care of much more than just wasteful, and ugly plastic bags, while giving millions of poor and struggling a fighting chance.
And it would reduce the number who get ornery in grocery stores.
