1. Trump wins a second term, which is possible.
2. Shallow Victory, Defeating Trump - Democrats win in a close race. Divisiveness continues.
3. Deep Victory, Transcending Trump Running together in a new paradigm Democrats win by a healthy margin, transcending the R/D duality, as Americans first, and reach more deeply to a wider swath. They will have found healthy ways to touch the pain of those susceptible to Trump' toxic, powerful appeal. They will have a mandate, and promote unity.
Rather than running against each other, candidates can run with each other, as Marianne said. We need them to work together, to consciously and intentionally play as a team to synergize and collaborate to save us. What might this look like?
The New Paradigm: The Campaign as a Field
Consider the candidates as constituting a field a psychological, social, political, spiritual field. Field theory, an aspect of Gestalt psychology introduced by Kurt Lewin, emphasized the dynamics and patterns of interactions that influence, and are influenced by all participants. Each candidate can engage in the field in a positive, creative way, a neutral way or a negative, destructive way, as in the 2016 Republican debates.
Running together, each candidate can impact and enrich every other candidate. Each can stimulate, challenge, and inspire each to be better, bolder and wiser. They can learn, test bold ideas, sharpen policies, and become better candidates and leaders. Each policy idea can be improved, supported, and adopted by most or all. With the wisdom of the field, sound ideas can reach their best version. Candidates can be emboldened to champion ideas they did not propose. Each can charge the field, and be charged by it, for our great benefit.
A Work Against Nature
Carl Jung, founder of psychoanalytic psychotherapy said that consciousness is a work against nature, an opus contra Naturum. Emerging new paradigms meet with resistance. This work of conscious evolution will be opposed, misunderstood and possibly denigrated as naive.
There is a strong pull of habit, dualism, and unconsciousness for the horse race. Many are eager for the Democrats to go after each other, for the "gloves to come off." This is beginning with attacks on and from Biden, who announced as an attack on Trump. Hopefully a critical mass of the candidates will resist and rise above, I imagine with Marianne's leadership, generosity of spirit and inspiration, other kindred spirits, like Andrew Yang, and I imagine Mayor Pete, Michael Bennett, Tulsi Gabbard, Elizabeth Warren, who charged us not to think of this as a horse race, Kamila Harris, and others, including the four candidates who did not get into the debate who support this vision.
Team for America Endgame
In the horse race one candidate receives the nomination and the others move on. Candidates who are running for a higher purpose may choose to collaborate. Among the 24 Democratic candidates many may have it within them to transcend the old paradigm.
I imagine the new paradigm endgame. Following a synergistic process of evolving together, candidates, with public support, ultimately sort themselves out into the best-case scenario for our country. An optimal nominee will emerge and others will find roles than enable them to give their greatest gifts whether as vice president, secretary of state, cabinet positions, new cabinet positions, senators, policy analyst, and so on. They will continue to work as a team to determine the best people to serve in cabinet positions for the environment, energy, health promotion, economics, waging peace.
Beyond each having individual platforms, the team could develop an ideal, optimal platform best for the country. They could act together as a policy laboratory using evidence-based social science research on policies, scrutinizing ideas to reach a consensus on what policies are sound and best for our country.
Team for America Process Turbocharging Policies, Field as Policy Laboratory
The new paradigm process is dynamic, fluid and evolutionary. Some candidates are immersed in the system and shaped by it, which has value to the field. However, they have to raise money, play the game and be cautious in calculating the costs of bold ideas. Bold new ideas go through a process we have seen with Medicare for all, the Green New Deal, Universal Basic Income and more
