Caught flat-footed, Caribbean governments cannot hope to arrest this slide or combat this attack. And it is this that is so worrying because the million dollar question is this: what will the Caribbean look like 10 years from now? Already the region is seeing an upsurge of non-communicable diseases like cancers of every kind, hypertension, diabetes, and so on. The fact of the matter is that these diseases are DIRECTLY linked to life-style choices and behavior.
Ergo, the proliferation of American fast food outlets now sweeping across the Caribbean loaded with Trans fats, food additives, colorings while local agriculture suffers because genetically altered foods are cheaper to produce in America. The end result, as Jamaica can bear testimony to is the death of local food and livestock industries that facilitate the opening up of a new front for cultural imperialism.
