This is an open letter from a person in Donbass. Like anything written by a particular individual, it represents that person's own opinion. Nevertheless, I think it also offers important insight into the thoughts, hopes and fears of most people in south-east Ukraine:
We the people of
South-East Ukraine want to address the people of America, Europe, Asia and
Africa. Please hear us!
The illegal government
sitting in Kiev has given orders to kill us. Our strongest desire is to live in
peace. We have families and want to watch our kids grow up and fall in love. We
appeal to you: Don't believe what this government is telling you!
Here in the South-East of Ukraine, a real civil war is starting. The government has brought foreign mercenaries armed with powerful weapons to use against peaceful people. They are killing our men. They are using gas!
We do not want to participate in the illegal elections they want to have. The people of South-East Ukraine do not accept the Government in Kiev as legitimate. How can we? They keep saying they want to kill us! Could you accept that? Our legitimate president is Yanukovych.
There are a lot of neo-fascists (in Ukraine we call them "banderovcy"), mercenaries, and right-wing political parties such as "Svoboda" in South-East Ukraine. They are in every city! We will take the fight to them! There is nothing else we can do. We think it is better to be killed in battle then to accept fascism. Believe us. We are the people of South-East Ukraine.
We do not want to enter NATO and the European Union. That is why all the illegitimate usurpers of the government of Ukraine want us killed: Turchynov, Yatsenyuk, Tymoshenko, Yarosh, Poroshenko, and Klitschko.
They will kill our peaceful citizens in the regions of Donetsk, Kharkiv, Lugansk, and Odessa. These regions are already surrounded by military machines--tanks, armored troop carriers, and mercenaries. We beg the people of America, Europe, Asia and Africa: Help us stop fascism! We have no right to let them start a THIRD WORLD WAR. This will be nuclear war. Don't forget that! The whole earth will be destroyed. Before this final fight, we the people of the South-East of Ukraine beseech you. It is our last wish. Listen to us and understand! Help us and help yourself! We will fight and die for the peace of the world!
NOTE: The Saint George's Ribbon commemorates the fight and victory over Nazi occupation in all the former Soviet Republics. That is why the Bandera hate it so much. It is the symbol of freedom from their type of oppression.
