Thus, under their conditioning, we escape into our standardized housing and apart-ments through massive consumerism which makes us think we are both free and safe. Apart-ments; divide and conquer. Keep them mesmerized on the internet, I-Pads, I phones, and so on! "Let them not deal with reality!" is the command of the God they worship. Have we allowed this false idol to become our God too?

Who cares that my blouse was made by slave girls in Mexico or China? "Not my problem" the woman shopping at the big box store says as her wages and her daughter's wages are slashed. And what of benefits for the labor toiling in that store? Forget it! Mother, daughter, father and son are required to work more hours for less pay and no benefits...well other than the glory of working for a major chain!

" Not my problem?!" we chant as we head off to work for The Man, grateful at least to have a job.

Yet, in spite of evidence to the contrary, we liberals and conservatives declare ourselves as free and as proponents of freedom? We seek safety; but, safety at what cost? Do we continue to surrender our power, our voices, and our bodies/souls to what Makana calls the few? Will we, like the Jews at the mercy of the bloodied hands of Nazis, find ourselves in concentration camps for speaking against the "powers that be? Scarey stuff. But I'm hearing the prison at Guantanamo may be in store for many of us. Some dare to show pictures online of masses of coffins stockpiled by the government. I wish I could rest sure that this is paranoia.

Is this in store for us? Are we of a certain class pinpointed for this fate? Or of a certain race? A particular religion? Or nationality? What if we speak out in our false belief of freedom of speech? Is this our fate? How often do we hear of internet spying? Do you think these articles on OpEd go unnoticed?

Ah, yes, the Dylans, U2's, the songs produced by the late Beatles and others have done their part in helping us to awake.

This same creative spirit lives on in Makana. It is in all of us, if we awaken to it. Yes, we do have a choice and a voice. Thus, we can partake in the vision of Paul Simon when he wrote this line to "Sound of Silence:"

"And the words of the prophets are written on the Subway Walls"

Do we truly consider the shenanigans of the Corporations as wise prophets? Will Monsanto truly become our saint and save us from starvation? Come on now, folks. Are we really that gullible?

Thus, who do we ultimately wish to empower: Ourselves? Our daughters and sons? Future generations, perhaps? Or do we continue to empower what Makana and many others deem as the 1% for the sake of our comfort in this day and age?

"Power to the People" John Lennon replies to Makana!

This means "Power to the 100%?"

How will we claim that power? Makana's "weapon" is a slack guitar and mellifluous voice. He doesn't suggest armed revolt, but rather taking radical responsibility for our lives. At his website, www.mindmints.com, he preaches such (r)evolutionary ideas as:

  • "As long as you see yourself as a victim, your loved ones as victims, even the Earth as a victim, you create dissonance between Life and your view of Life."
