The World Campaign must use the occasion of the sixty-fifth birthday of Abdullah Ocalan to not only highlight his unacceptable situation, but also the future of the Kurdish people and peace in Turkey. There are six months left before he can possibly light up and blow out the candles of his cake, in the hope of eating and sharing the satisfying results of their incessant labors for freedom and their human rights with his people.
Even from prison, Nelson Mandela represented the ideals cherished by humanity that inspired the world. The campaign to free Abdullah Ocalan must not only continue with greater determination, but must be backed by sanctions and other disciplinary and diplomatic measures against the Erdogen regime to force it to heed reason. For too long it has played the NATO partner card on its western allies, seducing them into unquestioningly turning a blind eye to its excesses against those it claims are its citizens, but which it treats in ways already determined illegal for animals.
As the descendants of the founders of a rich and sophisticated civilization which emerged from and developed quintessential features of Middle Eastern culture for centuries, the Kurdish people deserve the support of their western cousins from both the Old and the New Worlds, and all other nations and political entities seeking to uphold the inalienable dignity and rights of human beings.
Ninety-one years of discrimination and denial of the escalating repression, terror and aggression sustaining the Turkish regime are more than humanity can afford to tolerate.
