Smoke from Gaza hospital after a missile attack
To this observer looking at all the current geopolitical crises in the world-Gaza, Ukraine, Taiwan-it's hard to remember a time more explosive than the present one where things could unravel and escalate into a maelstrom. Especially now in Gaza.
The IDF, Israeli Defense Force, seems poised to initiate a ground invasion into Gaza making it the most imminent crisis about to happen.
The missile attack on the Gaza hospital last week where the Israeli's blamed Islamic Jihad for one of its missiles going off course while the Palestinian's blamed the Israeli's for the attack. Scores of innocent Gaza citizens were killed and wounded. The incident has enflamed Muslims throughout the world. Demonstrations have occurred even in the US in support of the Palestinian's and against Israel.
The IDF and the Lebanese Hezbollah have traded missile bombardments where a handful have been killed on each side but thus far there's been no full scale invasion. Only bombastic threats against each other.
However, if and when the IDF does invade Gaza with ground troops who knows what further escalation will occur not only from Hamas but also Hezbollah, Iran along with the rest of the Muslim world.
Hamas last week released two American women hostages, a mother and daughter, supposedly as a good will gesture toward the US. The US responded saying it wants all the hostages held by Hamas to be released. Hamas holds some 200 hostages from various nations.
Meanwhile the US has sent two aircraft carrier groups to the eastern Mediterranean supposedly as a deterrent force against Hezbollah and Iran from entering the conflict directly. Also a US Naval ship carrying 200 US marines has been sent to the area off the Israeli coast. Though the US says it has said it has no intention for its military entering directly into the fray.
Then of course there was President Biden in Israel at the same time of the hospital attack-which he knee jerked blamed the Palestinians.
The head of the UN Antonio Guterres was at the Egyptian Rafah checkpoint with Gaza pleading for humanitarian aid-food, water, fuel-be delivered to the beleaguered Palestinians in Gaza. Thus far Egypt has sent some 30 truckloads of water, food and fuel through its Rafah checkpoint crossing into Gaza.
Biden when asked by a reporter before getting onto Air Force One did he appeal to the Israeli's to hold off its land invasion into Gaza to which he replied, "Yes". Soon afterward an administration spokesperson said the president wasn't telling the Israeli's what to do. Please.
