Retired neurosurgeon Ben
Carson announced
he is seeking the Republican nomination for president. Although he has no
experience running for office, his lack of government experience has posed no
threat to his popularity on the political right.
Currently Carson ranks in the top five of a very crowded GOP presidential primary field, on par with actual GOP politicians such as former Gov. Jeb Bush, Sen. Ted Cruz, and Sen. Lindsey Graham. When it comes to momentum of supporters, his lack of government experience poses no threat, in fact it's revered.
Not only are liberals puzzled by this but so are some conservative pundits like S.E. Cupp. In her op-ed "Conservatives, get serious" she wrote that Carson is on record stating "political experience doesn't seem to help a whole lot and perhaps may be hurtful." That's rich and very convenient. If only President Obama, while a presidential candidate in 2008 was granted the same luxury. Obama held office on the state and federal level; still conservatives charged he had no right to run for the highest office in land. Of course liberals scuffed off this nonsensical accusation about Obama and now it seems the conservative right is prepared to do the same for Ben Carson.
Although Carson joined The Republican Party out of convenience, conservatives hold no grudge. Unabashed love for Carson holds and expands. If only the buck stopped there. Never mind that Carson is not in love with the second amendment, in fact he supports gun control believing people should be limited to owning certain firearms dependent on the area they live in. I myself am curious for more details on how he plans to delegate and regulate firearms as a GOP leader.
Liberals, do not hold your breath waiting for conservatives to hold Carson accountable for his support of gun control.
After all, it was Carson that stood up at last year's National Prayer breakfast and criticized President Obama while inches apart from one another. For this, Carson is glorified as the next great conservative right messiah. Senator Ted Cruz and Senator Lindsey Graham must be recoiling in confusion because at least they have political experience running for office.
If pissing off the President qualifies one to be future president then our mea culpa of democracy truly is in peril.
When it comes to other political issues he fairs no better. He stated prisons turn heterosexual men gay. And this man is a doctor. On foreign policy, well, he would have not gone to war in Afghanistan to capture Osama Bin Landen. Even liberals are dismayed by this. He would have not killed Saddam Hussein. Oddly, in holding these positions he still opposes the fact that he's an isolationist.
Want to end ISIS, according to Carson just defund them, because yes the United States is funding a militia while simultaneously working to destroy them. Makes absolutely no sense but conservatives do not care; they love Ben Carson like they love Reagan. Although one tiny exception, Reagan was a politician before he won the presidency.
The Atlantic describes Ben Carson politics perfectly, his "politics are conservative on some issues, but so eclectic as to be nearly incoherent overall. He's never run a political campaign, and has a tendency to do things like compare ISIS to the Founding Fathers. It's hard to imagine his candidacy surviving more serious scrutiny, but then again he's reportedly building an impressive political organization, especially in Iowa."
Next up: The disorganization.
The Washington Post has reported that several top tier officials have resigned from his campaign due to conflicts of two Super Packs, Run Ben Run and One Vote. The frustration has been that the Super Pac's have issued different agendas causing confusion for supporters and the campaign wields no power to rein them in. And by law that must remain separate being Carson has announced his candidacy. The important question, why did his staff not merge and ad-havoc the Super Pac's beforehand? Now they are dealing with the aftermath of chaos, and worse, publically. No worries though, conservatives do not care, Mr. Carson is their man. Sorry S.E.
So let's review:
1. Ben Carson's campaign is in chaos due to his precarious Super Pac's.
2. Ben Carson has never run for office.
