The Israeli's have gone and done it, invading Lebanon in the early hours of today.
"The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced the beginning of limited, localized, and targeted ground raids against the militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon on Tuesday". [1]
Last Friday Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was assassinated in an air strike conducted by IDF war planes dropping 500lb bombs.
Besides the IDF bombing raids in Lebanon, last week hand held pagers used by Hezbollah were detonated remotely killing several people and wounding thousands. The next day walkie-talkies used by the group to communicate were also detonated killing and wounding several people.
The Lebanese authorities attribute these detonations to the Israel's Mossad intelligence group-according to unidentified sources in the US media.
With this invasion by Israel it could very well have set the region on fire.
There is a way to stop the carnage. The UN Security Council should authorize a UN multi dimensional military force to the Israeli Lebanese border with the express purpose of stopping the IDF military campaign in Lebanon. Israel should be formally notified of the Council's decision immediately after it is made.
With such a decision by the Security Council there is no way Israel could continue its military campaign in Lebanon.
Of course the only problem to such a decision by the Council is getting the US on board with such an operation. That's because immediately after the Israeli's invaded US officials as usual said "Israel has the right to defend itself", blah, blah, blah.
So even though such a decision by the Council would stop Israel in its tracks the chances are close to nil with a likely US veto.
