When President Kennedy appointed Stewart Udall as USA Secretary of Interior, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors scheduled a special election in which Morris was elected to the House of Representatives.
As a Mormon grandson of Ella Stewart Udall, the first telegraph operator in the Arizona Territory, Congressman Morris was disturbed by the reports of the My Lai Massacre in Vietnam, in which hundreds of women, children and elderly (504) were gunned down next to trough/ditch, then the corpses were shoved into the ditch, by order of Lt. William Calley, later convicted, still alive and lives in Miami.
Morris was later a leading contender for the 1976 Democratic presidential nomination, which went to James Earl Carter Jr., the peanut farmer from Plains, Georgia, who had been Governor of Georgia.
In the Electoral College, Carter then bested Leslie Lynch King of Omaha, Nebraska, whom you may remember as "Gerald Rudolph Ford" of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
