The concept of policing during protests is wrong. The concept of policing should be, in the first place, to "serve and protect" and, in the second place, to enforce laws. As for enforcing laws, this is another way of saying "serve and protect" citizens from criminal activities.

The obvious solution for policing during protests is for the police to fan out in small groups and protect stores, offices and homes adjacent to the protesters' route from vandals and looters. Nothing more, and nothing less!

Oh, yes, the police should be handing out Covid-19 protective face masks to protesters as an act of benevolence toward their fellow human beings and to generally prevent the spread of the virus. To boot, this action would protect Donald Trump's "precious" economy from tumbling due to expected future lockdowns.

Perhaps President Trump can embrace this benevolent concept and enunciate it in front of St. John's Church. He could even hold the Bible, right side up and facing the protesters, and say (emulating Martin Luther King Jr.) "not free at last, not free at last".

Postscript: "When so much of the world is plunged in darkness and chaos, ring the bells that still can ring; " there is a crack, a crack in everything - that's how the light gets in".

Anthem, Leonard Cohen
