(8 comments) SHARE Tuesday, February 24, 2009 What Obama's risking in Afghanistan
President Obama's campaign slogan was "Change we can believe in." Americans, desperate for change, gave Mr. Obama a clear victory. Now in power, he's realizing that he can't deliver that change - at least in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Obama administration is facing military uncertainty regarding the war on terror. President Obama inherited a hefty load of problems that are arguably unsolvable. He may not be able to live up to his campaign promises of ending the war in Iraq and shifting military focus to Afghanistan.

While the blood flows Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell joined forces yesterday pushing through a bipartisan resolution in the Senate affirming U.S. support for Israel's military actions in Gaza. However, the war between Israel and Hamas is not as two-dimensional as the United States Senate would like to believe. This is a complex and asymmetric war that will not end favorably for either side -- if it ever ends.
(13 comments) SHARE Thursday, January 1, 2009 Israel: Attacks on Gaza will Likely Backfire
There is no sugar coating Israel's latest assault on Gaza. It's wrong and likely to backfire on Israel -- similar to the 2006 Lebanon War.
My uneducated guess is that the Israelis notified Washington prior to their bombardment of Gaza. But then again, what does it matter? Even if Washington didn't give Israel the green light, their government is so arrogant they would have attacked anyway.

When I cast my vote for Barack Obama, I'll do so acknowledging that he will not be handed a gift when he becomes president.
The Bush administration, aided by a bipartisan majority of Congress, will be leaving behind many problems that will take years to solve. As President, Obama will need to confront two costly wars, global terrorism, an economy on the brink and a serious energy crisis. Don't expect immediate change.

The United States and the Iraqi government are currently engaged in serious deliberations to outline the provisions of the Status Of Forces Agreement between the two countries. The government of Iraq will also have "limited jurisdiction" to prosecute U.S. military personnel and contractors who commit crimes on Iraqi soil. Is this what our troops volunteered for? I wonder if there is any fine print on enlistment contracts.

The news of Cindy Sheehan making it onto the ballot to challenge Speaker Pelosi struck a cord with me. When I was in Iraq witnessing the death of young Americans I asked myself this question: "Where are the parents?" I left the Army in 2005, and relocated to the Washington, D.C. area where I began to protest the war. That summer Cindy took the anti-war movement to Bush's backyard in Crawford, TX - my question was answered.

Both McCain's and Obama's Iraq policies are too ambiguous for the layperson to comprehend. It is clear that if you want to expedite the process of getting out of Iraq, Obama is your candidate. If you want to remain in Iraq indefinitely to acheive a so-called "victory" prior to redeploying our troops, McCain is your candidate.
(2 comments) SHARE Sunday, September 28, 2008 Can We Surge in Afghanistan?
The dialog between McCain and Obama in the presidential debate was mind blowing. Both are in full agreement on the need to increase our troop presence in Afghanistan. However, neither offer any firm plan to cut troop levels in Iraq -- something necessary to surge in Afghanistan. Regardless of policy positions being crafted by their staff and advisers, this issue is defining itself with the increasing strain on our military.
