Born Auckland, New Zealand in 1957. Always animal-mad I had the huge privilege of discovering the love of and the truth about the American Pit Bull Terrier more than a decade ago.
Since then I have met some of the finest human beings marching on the same crusade fighting for the lives of this great but tragic breed and the other breeds unfairly caught up in the appalling nightmare that is Breed Specific Legislation.
If you're one of the dwindling number of good but deluded folk in this matter, do yourself a favour: google 'the Pit Rules'. Having read a copy of the pit rules you'll see why the fighting breeds are the dogs least likely to bite you. Since you have to be able to handle your dog in the pit, man-biters are culled and have been for hundreds of generations.
Thanks to the political and media hype, some of the worst kinds of owners have been attracted to the breed (including the ever-virulent puppy-millers), hence the apparently high number of adverse incidents. Add to that the fact that the media pounce on 'pit bull' attacks - oftentimes even when the dogs aren't Pit Bulls - so that the public perception is that of a tsunami of pit bull attacks, when in truth they are five times more likely to be struck by lightning than killed by a dog.
Pit Bulls are the underserving scapegoats for legislation aimed at making dog ownership expensive and difficult with the desired result being a public opting out of dog ownership.
Google PETA, and HSUS. You will be surprised to learn that their unashamed aim is the demise of the domestic pet.
If a pet free world is OK with you, do nothing. But if a self-serving and dishonest media driven by a bunch of ideologues covertly building a world you don't want is NOT OK, start your journey of enlightenment by reading the Pit Rules. Then google breed specific legislation and see who is speaking up for Pit Bulls, and out against BSL.
For your grandchildren to know the love of a dog, you need to step into the light too, and fight for the four-legged faction of our families.
