After growing up in the suburbs of Sacramento, I came of age as a student at UC Berkeley 1965-1968. I prefered not to kill people in black pajamas defending their own back yard so I skipped around Canada, Europe and Asia till Nixon quietly dropped all such cases. Resumed my education at Colorado College, immersing in symbolic interactionist theory and practice, then visited by brother the whale biologist on San Juan Island WA to help study orcas in 1980. It turned out that what I had learned in sociology applied to the orcas as new studies showed these overgrown dolphins to have developed cultures "without parallel except in humans." Since the mid-90's my wife and I and many others have been providing education and advocacy to uplift the image of the orca and our friendly local orca community, and handing out information to protect them from the many onslaughts by simplistic human interference in their home and habitat.
