Bio: Phillip F. Nelson Author: LBJ: The Mastermind of the JFK Assassination, and LBJ: From Mastermind to "The Colossus"Bio: Phillip F. Nelson, Author: LBJ: The Mastermind of the JFK Assassination, and LBJ: From Mastermind to "The Colossus" Phil Nelson's interest in the darker character traits of Lyndon B. Johnson began while Nelson was still in high school, in February, 1961 when he heard a radio news flash that an airplane crash had occurred three days earlier on Johnson's ranch, but it was just then being announced for the first time; further, the report noted that the vice president was safe and had not been aboard the plane when it crashed, but then stated that, unfortunately, both of the pilots died instantly upon impact. Nelson thought it rather odd that it took so long to bring that news item to the public's attention. From then on, he noticed that scandals seemed to follow him around, seemingly growing exponentially with each iteration. The worst stories about Lyndon Johnson have been ignored by other Johnson biographers, who choose to "cherry pick" only the stories which fit the paradigm designed by LBJ himself: that of a gregarious cowboy having a very charismatic personality who cared about other people, especially the disadvantaged and minority classes, as well as pretty women. In reality, he was known to refer to common people as "pissants." By ignoring certain names that lead one into these dark corners -- names like master con-man Billie Sol Estes, his lover and mother of their son, Madeleine Brown, his associate Bobby Baker, who managed many of Johnson's financial shenanigans, and Texas Ranger Clint Peoples, who carried on a 30+ year investigation of Lyndon Johnson -- other biographers have given the 36th president a pass for having been at the top of the pyramid of conspirators who murdered the 35th president. It is a story of epic Shakespearian drama, down to his use of military personnel as pawns to carry out his outrageous orders. His first book, LBJ: The Mastermind of the JFK Assassination, was self published in 2010, then acquired by Skyhorse Publishing in 2011, reedited with new material and published as a hard cover, then as a soft-cover in 2013. The sequel, LBJ: From Mastermind to "The Colossus" was also published by Skyhorse Publishing, in 2014.
