Machiavelli on Trusting: How to Trust Again in 2017? Start with Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the UN Machiavelli cautioned that maintaining a republic requires keeping the aristocracy both small and weak, and that the population should rise up once a decade and throw the bums out of office. Today, our aristocracy is extraordinarily large with almost unlimited power and strength, and those bums have been there for quite some time. How the Trump administration governs will determine our Government's nature for decades to come.

Machiavelli on Powers of Religion in Civic Affairs and on Freedom and Corruption (Reflections on Electoral College Day) How fitting that this section of the longer series is posted on the day of the Electoral College vote! Machiavelli's Discourses on Religion in Civic Affairs and on Freedom vs. Corruption are deeply compelling today. Hopefully, his insights might help many to comprehend the swift and sweeping changes that are in store in the near future. I appreciate OEN's Rob Kall and the Editors for allowing me to use this "bully pulpit."

Machiavelli, Then and Now 2016 Reflections on The Discourses of Niccolo Machiavelli The very divisive 2016 presidential election highlighted this problem with a decrease in the number of people voting. Machiavelli's Discourses is an analysis of governance that gives insight into current national and world events. It is at once profound and disconcerting, and states principles that every citizen of a republic should understand in order to maintain their republic.
