As we talk about regulating the "troubled-teen" industry... Privately operated behavior-modification programs and residential treatment programs operate without federal regulation. Many programs rely on coercive methods that consistently result in cruel forms of abuse and deaths. As we consider how to address this muti-billion dollar industry, let's explore the underlying issues rather than merely trying to avoid the symptoms.

Brainwashing is Real, Part 2: Office of the Surgeon General "Statement" on Brainwashing I don't present this synopsis with any authority other than my own experience of being brainwashed and my lifelong journey of reintegration. Also not included in this article are any real solutions. I have lots of ideas about how to help America's troubled teens, but they are all just "unproven theories."

Brainwashing Is Real and It's Really Not Therapy Abuses within the troubled-teen industry are getting more and more attention in the news. This article calls attention to the reason this abuse persists. Abusive programs for troubled teens utilize the principles of brainwashing as outlined by Lifton, Meerloo, Singer, Schein and others. Brainwashing is perpetrated through abuse and is the reason there is a need for abuse in these programs. This article implicates the APA.
