Zach Heffernen graduated from the University of Iowa in honors with a degree in Management, a degree in Marketing, a minor in International Studies and a certificate in Human Rights. While studying there he founded and presided over University of Iowa Students for Human Rights. The organization spearheaded a campaign that prevented the closure of the UI Center for Human Rights and amplified its budget by $200,000.

Zach also won several prestigious awards during his time of activism and public service at the University of Iowa including but not limited to: the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Award, the Phillip G. Hubbard Human Rights Award, a Public Service Commendation and the Outstanding Student Organization Leader Award.

He is currently the Marcher Director for the Great March for Climate Action. The non-profit is organizing a 1000-person march across the United States, from Los Angeles to Washington DC, to inspire society to take climate action.

Zach lives in Des Moines, IA with his wife, Elizabeth Miller, and dog, Xerxes.
