On Wednesday, the day that the government was set to run out of money, the Senate finally voted to fund it for a short time, setting up a similar vote later that day in the House of Representatives. The stopgap measure runs through Dec. 11, by which time Congress will not only have to figure out how to fund federal operations for the rest of the year, but also raise the nation's debt limit. It passed 78 to 20. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell hailed the action, saying it was a step toward getting the Senate to function properly again.
