Well it's good to see that with all the important issues facing America today that our Attorney General has his priorities straight. A.G. Michael Mukasey told the American Bar Association this week that no one is going to be prosecuted for the crimes committed in Justice while hiring nothing but Republicans and prosecuting no one but Democrats for the past 7.5 years.

Whew!  Glad that little dustup has been settled, aren't you? Nice to know that if you break the law, the chief Cop O' The Land has got your back--you can walk away from jail with impunity, not having to worry about those Damn Democrats picking nits over InJustice in the agency charged with enforcing the Law of the Land. You may recall that former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales resigned over this issue, and that others have been subpoenaed--including Monica Goodling and Kyle Sampson, among others, not to mention Karl "Does It Smell Like Sulphur In Here?" Rove. Two weeks ago a Federal Judge ruled that these miscreants must in fact obey the Congressional subpoenas and testify, or else face indictment and arrest. That ruling is now on appeal by...you guessed it, the "Justice" Department.

What did they do that was so terribly wrong? Well, in the case of Carol Lam in San Diego, she had the temerity to break the secret omerta code by successfully prosecuting and convicting a gumba, Republican Randy "Duke" Cunningham, for taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from Defense Contractors who were literally making a killing selling death toys and ancillary services in Iraq. U.S. Attorney Lam lost her job for slighting a bro, affecting the balance of power in the House of Representatives. (They still had a 24-seat majority of Repugnicants, but it was the principle of the thing.)

Oh yeah, and it turns out that Lam was also getting just a little too close to the White House for comfort as well. Seems that defense contractor MZM installed computers and furniture in Cheney’s office for $140K, a first-time one-time contract, out of the blue it would seem. Two weeks later, MZM turns around and buys a yacht for Duke Cunningham for…surprise, surprise, $140K. Duke went to jail for taking such bribes, and it appears that not only was he on the take, but that the money may have been laundered through the White House as well.

In the case of David Iglesias in New Mexico, he got summarily canned from his job as U.S. Attorney because he ignored repeated warnings from Republicans Pete Domenici and Heather Wilson who were trying to sic him like a pit bull on local state Democrats by filing illegal lawsuits against them for non-existent voter fraud...right before the 2006 elections, of course. (We still don’t know their names, because the indictments were sealed.)

The idea was that the Democratic candidates would be so busy fighting off the faked-up Swift Boat charges of voter fraud that they would lose the election, thus preserving the Land of Enchantment for the GOP. Same deal in Alabama. Same deal in at least four other states. Goodling and Sampson concocted a clever plan to make sure that anyone being considered for the job of U.S. Attorney would toe the right-wing conservative party line, prosecuting Dems, turning a blind eye to the sins of brethren and sisteren in the Republican party, and making life safe for the neo-con agenda in the courts and in all legislation.

This is supposed to be a nation of laws, not of people. Ignoring subpoenas and treating the law as your own personal playpen is not upholding the Constitution, and it is certainly not the image of Blind Justice when the law treats you differently because of your voter registration. But Mukasey doesn't give a damn, and he flipped the bird to Congress and the Courts this morning by effectively exonerating these criminals and saying that the Justice department will not pursue any prosecution of these cases. Must be nice to rob a bank and walk away scot free. Maybe we should all try it.

But make sure you change your voter registration to the "Party of Lincoln" before you pull a gun on the bank teller. Willie "Because that's where the money is" Sutton.
