"The presidential election exposed the liberal class as a corpse. It fights for nothing. It stands for nothing." -- Chris Hedges
The election is over, Barack Obama, the liberals "best hope" won a second term and his supporters remain willfully indifferent to the fact that he poses a clear and present threat to our civil liberties.
The Democratic Party's 2008 platform focused on restoring "our constitutional traditions." The party platform clearly stated:
We support constitutional protections and judicial oversight on any surveillance program involving Americans. We will review the current Administration's warrantless wiretapping program. We reject illegal wiretapping of American citizens, wherever they live.
We reject the use of national security letters to spy on citizens who are not suspected of a crime. We reject the tracking of citizens who do nothing more than protest a misguided war. We reject torture. We reject sweeping claims of "inherent" presidential power.
We will revisit the Patriot Act and overturn unconstitutional executive decisions issued during the past eight years. We will not use signing statements to nullify or undermine duly enacted law...
As soon as Obama assumed the presidency he tossed the above notions in the trash and embraced -- and enhanced -- the malignant Bush-Cheney surveillance state. Obama's liberal base reacted by excusing or simply ignored his malfeasance during his first term, and they rewarded his betrayal with their votes in the current election.
It's important to note that the 2012 Democratic Party platform made no mention of "our constitutional traditions." That's because Barack Obama has -- with his supporters blessings -- taken civil liberties off the table.
Chris Hedges
aptly notes that "the liberal class clung desperately during the long nightmare of this political campaign to one or two issues, such as protecting a woman's right to choose and gender equality, to justify its complicity in a monstrous evil."
Admittedly, they claimed that they would "hold his feet to the fire" and "push him in the right direction" once he gets re-elected; but the truth is they did nothing of the sort during his first term and there's little reason to believe that they will during his second.
They "talk the talk," but they don't "walk the walk." And that poses a clear and present threat to Lady Liberty.
