the act of paying attentioni, through deep... is what's important to some of our most essential throught processes-- conceptual thinking, critical thinking.
We lose a lot of the fundamental processes that give richness to our thinking and intellectual lives.
Our most sophisticated, deepest emotions, like empathy, arise from brain processes that are quite slow to emerge-- there's one line of theory, if we're distracted all the time we're not able to activate those processes that give rise to our deepest emotions.
books are changing-- vooks-- video books, cell phone novels...
bottom up forms of attention, where our focus is being molded by what's going on in the environment-- games-- stimuli-- images determine what you are focusing on-- bottom up, externally promoted forms of attentions. THat's a very different kind of attention than top down attentiveness that involves filtering and reading a book. That's determined not by environment but by you.
Post literary mind--
dismisses out of hand a much deeper and ultimately more satisfying way of thinking, paying attention and concentrating.
rudeness of constantly glancing at smartphone.
take a three day vacation from technology... great danger is you never even learn to develop those capabilities.
