Tom is the co-founder of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), which played a leading role in the protests against the Vietnam War. He was also a member of the "Chicago 8," indicted for charges of conspiracy for his role in protests surrounding the 1968 Democratic National Convention, and he was a state assemblyman and senator in California for many years.
