The Columbia Journalism Review recalls how the MSM covered the first Earth Day back in 1972, during the Nixon Administration. Tricky Dick went on to fund the EPA and the Clean Water Act in response.  He wasn't all bad. Although, Daniel Ellsberg writes in Doomsday Machine that he almost nuked North Vietnam, so he wasn't all good, either. See, that's  journalistic balance.

The CJR is a good piece to read, recalling an era when sh*t got done by public demand on its elected officials.  It's all "f*ck the public now," as Ralph Nader might say.
