Capitalism and it's cousin, imperialism are THE WAY that western culture has, just about religiously, engaged with the world. Any other approach has been considered barbaric or uncivilized. But we can learn much from indigenous peoples. They function with different economies, including gift economies. Capitalism is not the only solution. It IS the official religion of the dominating nations of the world, and it is enabled by the Abrahamic religions of the world-- the same ones that have enabled the ultimate top-down monarchies, emirates and theocracies throughout the world.
Challenging capitalism requires a recognition that it is much more than simply an economic model. It is an enabler of psychopathic individuals and corporations which is empowered by some of the most powerful religions and it has become deeply enmeshed in people's core beliefs about themselves and their culture. It can be changed or replaced, but first it must be recognized for what it is.
