Even as Pelosi and Schumer enthuse over their newfound friendship with Trump, the United States is engaged in massive war games in Eastern Europe, targeting Russia. Mattis signaled last month that the Trump administration was planning on providing Ukraine with lethal weapons, a central plank of the warmongering agenda of the Clinton election campaign. Democrats in Congress are currently working closely with Republicans, led by Senator John McCain, to push through a military authorization bill that will enormously increase spending on the US war machine.
In June, the World Socialist Web Site wrote that the bitter political struggle in Washington reflected sharp divisions within the ruling class, in which there was no progressive or democratic faction. "If Trump were removed from office by his opponents in the 'deep state' and the Democratic Party," we said, "it would not represent a victory for democracy, let alone an improvement in the conditions of the working class."
Any alliance between the Democrats and Trump would produce the same result, but in a different form. If they feel confident that foreign policy is in the hands of the military and intelligence apparatus, the Democrats are willing to make a deal with Trump on domestic policy, the better to contain and suppress social opposition.
Whether such a political realignment takes hold remains to be seen. However, what is clear is that the principal target of any agreement between the Trump administration and the Democrats is the working class.
