People hate the term "politicians" and love "leaders." Progressives should refer to their own as leaders and the opposition as politicians.
Don't use acronyms like PPE; use "protective gear."
The people progressives address should be able to picture everything they say. Don't talk about rights if they don't have them. Avoid the term altogether. In 2015 SCOTUS Chief Justice John Roberts voted for marriage equality, not gay rights. After that, support among both major parties increased for marriage equality.
Attitudes toward gays also improved with the airing of television shows like "Modern Family" and "Gray's Anatomy."
Avoid the terms "illegal aliens" and "asylum seekers," which "others" them. Healthcare reform is far from socialism but, said Westen, more like regulated capitalism. The constant reference to healthcare programs as socialist should be challenged, not ignored. The term Obamacare repels Republicans, who named it [though Obama actually liked the term and encouraged its use].
Westen said that the term Medicare, though not "Johnsoncare," turns off Republicans. No Child Left Behind was a totally appealing name for bad legislation.
Coinages as well as traditional usages should be tested before being kept or discarded: "Instead of saying this, say that."
