When we were attacked on 9/11, there were those who called for peace and love and restraint in the face of an enemy who wished us harm for a long list of grievances, some of which were actually legitimate. These people were smoking crack, and were treated as such in the face of our rage and our anger, both of which were righteous. We went into Afghanistan, where the planners of the attacks had holed up, and took out the government that aided them, and put the enemy on the run. Yes, civilians died, and mistakes were made, but we had a right to defend ourselves from future attacks from an enemy that had carried out one so far. And if we hadn't been so mind-shatteringly stupid as to divide our forces and go on a fools' errand in Iraq, we might have caught or killed them all.
We were right to do what we did.
So why is Israel not right to invade a stronghold of its sworn enemies in order to protect its civilian population from further attacks? Are they really so evil as to have taken away their own right to defend themselves? Or are we just so hamstrung by our inability to judge the situation, given its many nuances and judgment calls, that we'd prefer to keep the big, shrieking headlines and death tolls to a minimum, thus keeping the situation on the back burner of our minds, and keeping us from having to ask, and answer, a really tough question?
Goddess help me, I don't have an answer either. All I want is peace on Earth, but I never seem to get it.
