On the surface, Khomeini appeared to be wishing to free Palestine from Israeli occupation. However he seemed to be blinded by religious zeal since his words did not make any sense.

The conflict with Israel is totally unnecessary. Why? Iran does not even share any borders with Israel; Tehran and Jerusalem are 1500 miles apart, with several countries between them!

Outside interference by other countries to resolve the Palestinian issue has just made it more complicated, beginning with the First World War. Outside interference simply does not work. The best example of this is the current problems in Gaza, as well as in the rest of the Middle East.

In the beginning, Khamenei called Israel a cancerous tumor that should be removed from the Middle East. In the end, he managed to destroy both Gaza and Hamas.

Origins of Muslim / Jewish Conflict

The origin of the Muslim / Jewish conflict could be found in the life of Prophet Mohammad himself. Mohammad hated the Jews of Arabia because they would not accept him as the last prophet of the god.

Also, Mohammad suffered from epilepsy, and whenever his seizures caused him to become excessively angry, he battled with Jews. Although the issue of Mohammad's epilepsy is not well known, I proved it in my book, Sword and Seizure, Prophet Mohammad's Epilepsy and Creation of Islam (2006), which can be accessed for free here.

Mohammad came up with the verses of jihad in the Quran, which made it seem reasonable to fight against Jews and die for God.

On that account:

Shakir 5:32 For this reason did We prescribe to the children of Israel that whoever slays a soul, unless it be for manslaughter or for mischief in the land, it is as though he slew all men; and whoever keeps it alive, it is as though he kept alive all men; and certainly Our messengers came to them with clear arguments, but even after that many of them certainly act extravagantly in the land.

Shakir 5:33] The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement.

Also, when Mohammad needed gold to win the hearts of his followers, he accomplished that by plundering Jewish tribes. He massacred Jewish people during the battles of Bani Ghoraize / Bani Ghingha / Bani Nazir and killed the remaining Jews in the battle of Khaybar Fortress. The result of these battles was the extermination of most of the Jews of Arabia.

With that kind of historical background, which is documented in Mohammad's original biography (listed below), there would not be any hope for peace. That is not to say that no one can achieve peaceful living. The recent successes of countries like Egypt, Jordan, UAE, and many other small countries of the world are a testament to living in peace.
