Anybody who has read my book or articles understands that my mission is to raise awareness of economic inequality. It's an important issue that could lead to the downfall of civilization. But with the help of some friends, I've come to understand that it's an issue that simply can't be addressed until we get big-money interests out of our democratic processes and institutions. In fact no other significant issues can be fundamentally addressed as long as corporations maintain their hegemony over America and other developed economies.
Lawrence Lessig is today running for President of the United States. This brilliant academic is an activist and advocate for campaign finance reform. He is a one-issue candidate, but his issue is the gateway to meaningful reform in all other political and economic arenas. Mr. Lessig must succeed with his agenda before we have any hope of nonviolent reform that might lead to populist reforms of any kind.
You might like Bernie Sanders. Bernie has an agenda of up to eleven distinct issues, all of which are relevant to our national well-being. But only one of them matters - getting big-money interests out of politics. You might like Elizabeth Warren. Political inequality - corruption - is at the center of a more comprehensive agenda pursued as US senator. On this issue Warren, Sanders, and Lessig agree. But in order to bring about any of the other reforms on a broader agenda, only one issue matters - getting money out of politics. And that issue must be our primary focus.
And yet, Lessig was absent from the stage of the first Democratic debate, even though his singular insight remains unique among the candidates. Perhaps Lawrence Lessig should be considered more seriously for nomination of the Democratic party to the office of President of the United States of America. Oh, and either Liz or Bernie would make a great veep!
