Early identification of sexual abuse victims appears to be crucial to the reduction of suffering of abused youth and to the establishment of support systems for assistance in pursuing appropriate psychological development and healthier adult functioning . As long as disclosure continues to be a problem for young victims, then fear, suffering, and psychological distress will, like the secret, remain with the victim. This is what some teachers on the Teacher Net Chatboard have to say about John McCain being against teachers helping parents teach children about sexual predators:
Posted by kindergarten on 9/09/08: have they no shame?
Posted by More proof the republicans are the ones "running scared" on 9/09/08: What's next, Obama eats aborted fetuses for breakfast?
Sarah Palin gave us Librarians Against Palin and now John spawns Teachers Against McCain.
This McCain campaign advertisement tries to portray Obama as someone who wants “comprehensive sex education” in kindergarten. I fail to comprehend how John McCain fails to understand the commonsense of parents and teachers working together to teach young at risk children to "GO TELL YOUR MOM AND DAD."
John McCain is not the only one on his team who cannot, or will not, understand the trauma sexual assault can produce. As Mayor of the City of Wasilla, Alaska, Palin had the gall to charge victims of sexual assault $300.00 to $1,200.00 for their own rape kits. A rape kit is used to collect DNA from the victim. This one test not only helps catch the rapist, it will put them behind bars. DNA collection has to be performed immediately after the rape for it to be of any use. Even when the person performing the test is doing their best to be kind, it is an ordeal for the victim to endure and a another attack on their dignity. Sarah Palin doesn't mind rape victims experiencing the further indignity of having to pay the police department $1,200.00 to do their damn job.
Tony Knowles (D) was Governor of Alaska while Sarah Palin was mayor of Wasilla. Knowles signed into law a bill designed to prevent victims of sexual assault from being billed for tests to collect DNA evidence. This bill also held law enforcement agencies investigating the assault responsible for the cost of testing victims of rape for disease as well as providing for low cost emergency contraception.
According to Frontiersman, Mayor Palin preferred a different policy towards rape victims:
"While the Alaska State Troopers and most municipal police agencies have covered the cost of exams, which cost between $300 to $1,200 apiece, the Wasilla police department does charge the victims of sexual assault for the tests."
"Wasilla Police Chief Charlie Fannon does not agree with the new legislation, saying the law will require the city and communities to come up with more funds to cover the costs of the forensic exams."
"I just don't want to see any more burden put on the taxpayer, Fannon said."
Unless Mayor Palin removed the 'gag' order she put into place immediately upon taking office which banned any city employee speaking with any reporter without her express permission, she was aware of this interview by her new police chief and what would be discussed prior to the interview taking place.
Frontiersman also spoke with another small town chief of police in Palmer, Alaska:
