Let me be clear: I am all for dropping thousands of food packets from unarmed drones into Ukrainian cities that the Russian Army is trying to starve. (Why isn't this being done already?)
I am all for sending thousands of unmanned and unweaponed drones over cities in Russia to drop hundreds of thousands of leaflets with photos of dead Ukrainian civilians murdered by Russian troops. (Why isn't this being done already?)
Why am I - reluctantly -- not for dropping a volunteer SEAL team on the Kremlin, arresting its President Putin, and bringing him before the bar of justice in The Hague? Very simple. He's an oligarch with a couple thousand H-Bombs, and if we tried that and failed he might obliterate a couple US cities.
You can't have international law and H-bombs too. Or democracy and H-Bombs. Or democracy and Fossil Fuels. Got to get rid of one or the other.
That's why, in at least 21 cities across the country this past week, some of us decided that living Passover this year required challenging Chase Bank, Vanguard, and other big money pools that are investing in the Fossil Fuel Pharaohs. And it's why we have begun to look at other fasts and festivals and other years.
[Along with the matzoh, that's a letter to the corporate head of Chase Bank: "Stop funding the Pharaohs who burn Earth, and start funding renewable energy!!"]
Maybe every festival should include an aspect that not only celebrates the past, not only lifts our spiritual lives in the presentn, but heals and transforms our Earth and our societies in the future?
There is actually a Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons with 86 signatories and 60 states that are parties. None so far is or has been a nuclear power, even small. But that is what needs to change. It can only change when -- if -- there is in each of the nuclear states a strong movement to abolish all the world's nuclear weapons. The cure-us-of-nukes and the cure-us-of-carbon movements need to be one: Movement for a Healthy Earth. Eco-Sanity. And they can't succeed without overcoming the oligarchs.
Did the last US President protect democracy by starting to get rid of the H-Bombs and the Fossil Fuels? Don't be silly. They were owned by US oligarchs, not Russians. Anyway, he liked the Russian variety, too.
OK. We had an election. Has the new President started to get rid of the H-Bombs and the Fossil Fuels? Don't be silly. They're owned by US oligarchs, not Russians.
There was an American President once, a long time ago, actually a conservative, who spoke about "the military-industrial complex." Translation: American oligarchs.
He added: "Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed."
His name was Eisenhower.
