Our religions were originally intended to help us avoid that pitfall and snare, and to avoid the egocentric delusion that one is entitled to rule. That is why Solomon wrote that pride goes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall. It is why Jesus said we should judge not, lest we be so judged, and love our neighbor as ourself.

That's what religion should be about.
