Users on one particular site, Kitco, even seem to brag about their ability to stir fear among innocent bystanders. Almost all of the negative comments on my original OpEd story were from users on Kitco discussion boards, people who seem to compete with each other to post the most outrageous claims of economic catastrophe. Please understand: These people are often unscrupulous profiteers, who want your money.

In my original article, I warned that urban legends and scare tactics are tools of manipulation. I was more right than I knew. It does appear, now, that this urban legend was created &/or used to attempt to manipulate the public into buying an already overpriced commodity. If you were tricked into buying something you don't need, you may want to file a grievance with the FTC, FBI, or SEC.

AUTHOR'S REQUEST TO READERS

I do have two requests to readers. First, please stop sending me every article published about our struggling economy. As I said in my original article, I've been saying for years that our economy is not sustainable. But none of these articles "prove" the hoax. Readers have sent me every article and link that even mentions Fortis, GM, Citigroup, IndyMac, etc... and NONE of them prove that 6,000 banks have failed or will fail by tomorrow.

Second, please stop sending me anti-Semitic and pro-Hitler materials. I am not Jewish, but hate speech like this is deeply offensive to me. I certainly don't mean to generalize, but I see a lot of these kinds of fundamentalist statements on the gold commodities discussion boards.

Third, please keep your wits about you. Think deeply about these issues, prepare for the worst, but do not fall prey to people who are going to profit from your panic. Please, do NOT do anything rash with your money, such as buying "snake oil" to protect you from the bad storm ahead. Get sound financial advice from experts, not from commissioned sales people or "middle-men". And, instead of buying commodities out of fear, think about small incremental steps to become more self-reliant, to take yourself off the grid, and make your life and community more sustanainable. How about an alternative fuel vehicle, or solar panels, or building an inexpensive passive solar heating/cooling unit for your home or apartment?

And please, do not focus your efforts on abstractions and boogey men (particularly if your conspiracy theory involves anti-Semitic or racist themes). Racism will make our problems worse - only unity and peace can provide longterm solutions to these many problems. The political and economic elites have ruined this country, and it's up to us to pick up the pieces when the sh*t hits the fan. Running around in hysteria, buying gold and burying your cash in your back yard, is not going to solve anything.

Final note: We're giving this a safety cushion. Monday July 14 will mark 15 days from the original 2-week prediction. At the end of the business day Monday, when we all see that 6,000 banks did not close down, I'll be accepting apologies from all you people who emailed and called me nasty names.
