My thesis is that the ADD combined with an oppositional disorder combined with a sleep disorder supports a politics based on propaganda, mass hypnosis, the absence of focused deliberation, which, therefore , repeats the same message (Big Lies) over and over to create an illusion of focus. Between Hitler's rallies and Trump's rallies, the only difference is in the costumes. It is all surface, all artifice, all fake. ADD and propaganda combine to produce a spectacle which buries any meaningful dialogue, which is essential for democracy to work.
ADD is a mental disorder which prevents focus and thereby learning. The friend who Trump said gave him the book of Hitler's speeches, which is ex-wife said was his bedside reading, says that "Trump has never read a book."
Hitler's speeches gave him shorter bites to deal with, and these speeches illustrated the principles of propaganda Hitler used, having learned them from American Public Relations doctrine (with Trump a master of commercial propaganda). Trump loves the poorly educated for their willingness to be led with lies and their lack of critical thinking skills; it also promotes the feeling that he, a man with learning disorders, is smarter. Those who refute his lies with facts are called liberals or losers or mudslingers.
If we look closely, we see the emphasis on just a few Big Lies, repeated endlessly, dovetails with the ADD personality disorder. If you cannot follow a complex argument, you can promote a short one: "Mexicans are rapists!"
It takes attention to learn that the crime rate for undocumented workers is far lower than US citizens, that the border cities are far safer than inland cities, that the murder rate for undocumented workers is up to 99% lower than US citizens )Bureau of Prisons reports 8 undocumented immigrant murders in 2013, with 14, 138 total in the nation). All this takes the ability to follow an argument, which takes a little time. Trump has shown he does not have this ability, favors the short retort, and moves from one critical issue to another. As I learned teaching those with ADD, you need to repeat a statement at least 3 times before it is heard. Then, it must be repeated. In education, this work; in politics, it leads to disaster.
The media, and thus public attention, is thus shunted from one issue (unexplored, undebated) to another but brought back to 2 or 3 key Big Lies. Today it is the evisceration of the Ethics Watchdog, tomorrow that will be history buried with another sensational scandal, to be replaced the next day. Distraction is the tool of those who fear a wide exploration of ideas or questions. Ask a question: Why would Russia not intervene to defeat Clinton, since they had both motive and means? And you will get not an answer but another question or a shift in focus. ADD aids deception when used to control the masses.
Thus the ADD personality disorder leads to burying critical issues while repeating a few basic Big Lies, repeated endlessly.
What are the symptoms of ADD? I will add to this diagnosis ADHD, which adds hyperactivity, such as Trump's inability to sleep through the night and his compulsive need to "see what is happening" and respond impulsively with provocative tweets, the perfect ADD/ADHD means of communication.
