Just as he would use his own ADD as a tool to gain power, he would use his oppositional disorder to attract large crowds of angry people, seeking revenge (and given them as scapegoats). In the end, this is the foundation of fascism.
Another sign of the combination of ADD and OD is his refusal to go to intelligence briefings, attacking the media which gave him billions in free air time, and attacking the intelligence agencies whose detailed reports he has no ability to attend to.
ADD plus OD = Donald Trump plus a large segment of his supporters. In my 20 years and 20,000 hours seeking to help youth with such disorders, I claim a certain skill in diagnosing and explaining those so afflicted and how they cause pain and suffering for others.
Just a little over a week ago, a radical and dangerous idea was put forth in a tweet by Trump: "Let it be an (nuclear) arms race." Under ordinary circumstances, the debate on this most critical issue (nuclear arms races, nuclear wars) would be front and center, but it has been replaced with several new momentary distractions, including the two-day flurry over gutting the Ethics Watchdog. The arms race, the risk of nuclear annihilation? Yesterday's news...............................
This essay (or rant, as the right wingers call it) will attempt to examine the validity of my friend's diagnosis and the way it is shaping the political process and landscape, replacing serious issues with one day flare-ups, creating a politics of dysfunction in which nothing is resolved, no problems examed and addressed, but instead, a political theater of flamboyant
I want to highlight the foundations of the kind of government promised in our founding document, a democratic Republic based on equality and consent of the governed. I will ignore the hypocrisy of Jefferson and others to focus on the principles themselves.
The Constitution overturned the principles of equality (3/5 count for slaves/Electoral College benefiting the low population Southern slave states (and today the rural conservatives states) and consent of the governed. The first elections had about 45,000 voters, all rich white males. This is 1% of the population. This is not consent but rule of the elite, whether slave owners or bankers. Today, despite enfranchisement, we are still ruled by the very top ranks of the 1%.
Today, we have closer to 50% voter participation, but the whole process is corrupted by the influence of Big Money and the fact that the Electoral College, which misrepresents the voting public, has, in 2 of our last 3 Presidents, declared the loser the Winner!
This corrupt system, which built into the Constitution tools to ensure the ruling elite's power, it is amplified by the power of Big money and the role of propaganda to "shape" public opinion and thus manufacture consent.........and to buy elections, politicians, laws, and regulatory agencies. For instance, the USDA has a revolving door with Big Ag, including biotech; the CIA has a revolving door with Wall St; the Treasury and Commerce have a revolving door with Wall St.
Thus the system is rigged institutionally and legally to benefit the rich. The losers: the rest of us. The method of control: propaganda based on masking the truth and offering sound bytes as a substitute for reasoned argument.
Now why, after 200 years of being ruled by slave owners (the first 7 Presidents) and since bankers and large corporations) are we stuck with a man who cannot focus for more than a minute on anything and has seduced a minority of the public (enough to win the Electoral College approval) to accept such short-term attention spans, jumping from one major issue to another, leaving reasoned reflection behind, as the new sensational tweet or comment absorbs the media and public consciousness?
