Re: Governor Don Siegelman and US Attorney Leura Canary

Dear President Obama:à ‚¬ ¨Ã ‚¬ ¨

I am very disturbed that US Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama, Leura Canary has not yet been replaced. Tamarah Grimes, a Republican paralegal working for several years on the Siegelman case, came forward and blew the whistle on egregious prosecutorial misconduct. Rather than follow up on Grimes's information, Grimes has been drummed out of her job, her reputation smeared and now the DOJ is going after her health insurance and unemployment benefits. (I know this because I interviewed Grimes for OpEdNews recently.) US Attorney Canary, the wife of Siegelman's gubernatorial opponent's campaign manager, on the other hand, remains snugly in place.

This is unseemly. There is much precedent for new administrations to replace appointees in the Justice Department. Yet you have not routinely done this. While it is undeniable that you have a lot on your plate, your lack of action is more especially troubling in cases where evidence of wrongdoing has been presented.

I highly recommend that you watch John McTiernan's powerful documentary The Political Prosecutions of Karl Rove. Then, you will understand why so many of your fellow Americans are so worried about the state of justice in the Justice Department.

You've done a lot to regain the world's favor in the last few months. Now, please turn to restoring justice to our judicial system. Otherwise, the approval of well-wishers will count for nothing and democracy will be nothing more than a hollow word.

Best wishes,
