In the list as above set down will be found every positively known fact of Shakespeare's life, lean and meager as the invoice is. Beyond these details we know not a thing about him. All the rest of his vast history, as furnished by the biographers, is built up, course upon course, of guesses, inferences, theories, and conjectures, an Eiffel Tower of artificialities rising sky-high from a very flat and very thin foundation of inconsequential facts." From "Is Shakespeare Dead?"
Who does Mark Twain think wrote the plays? Not the guy who wrote the doggerel above, surely. He was convinced it was Francis Bacon, who possessed the necessary literary skills along with deep knowledge of global statecraft. Others think the author was Edward de Vere. There are several candidates. The authorship question may never be resolved although a lot of people are pretty sure the Stratford "Shakespeare" didn't write those plays. I recommend you get Is Shakespeare Dead? in book form and enjoy it this summer. It may be a side of Twain some have not seen, and possibly a side of history few have seen as well.
