Submarine -- "sub" means "under" or "hidden", and "marine" means "water." Water is often used to symbolize the unconscious mind, or that which is below our normal consciousness or awareness. Water is a powerful, adaptable symbol, but it can also be symbolic of the fluid, boundless sea of space, the astral or emotional plane, or the ether of space.
This particular Yellow Submarine doesn't spend much time under water, though. For the most part, the Yellow Submarine sails through the air, or perhaps an undefined ether space. We could say this particular submarine travels through the astral or emotional plane of existence, or the world of illusions.
Making it a yellow submarine adds a meaning of intelligence or divine wisdom to this vehicle, turning it into a symbol of celestial truth. Putting these two words together, yellow and submarine, creates a complete message saying, "live in the mind and steer clear of illusion and the world of the emotions."
MAB: I love that! And how about the Woodstock Bus - how did that all begin, and why is the bus surfacing at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame now?
RH: How it started...the Woodstock Bus is actually my painted bus formally named "LIGHT" for the Baltimore-based rock band that it was designed for. They originally used it as the band's bus, to haul their gear around to gigs.
I first painted the LIGHT Bus in 1968 on commission from my friend Bob Grimm, a seriously talented musician and leader of a great local band on the verge of national stardom. I had been traveling with them and had taught all the band members a meditation we used to practice together before every show. It was called the "Light" meditation, and it really helped them warm up backstage at venues up and down the East Coast. They liked it so much they changed the name of their band to "Light". Grimm turned to me one day and said, "I want you to paint me a magic bus."

He paid me the enormous sum of $1000, and for the next several months, I transformed his 1963 VW split-window by covering it with symbolic murals. The subjects were the same I was deeply immersed in myself at the time, and the backbone of the AUM Esoteric Study Center and commune Savitria, which I co-founded. AUM was the first-ever state-approved school of occult metaphysics in the nation.
