The Woodstock festival defined the idealism of the new generation, at least for a little while, until Madison Avenue advertisers turned peace and love into a marketing slogan. At Woodstock, the people had peacefully gathered in a park to listen to music. They had co-existed, and their music and love had transformed the Blue Meanies into helping them -- at least for a few days.
Afterward, there was a short-lived optimism that music festivals would change the world. Rolling Stone magazine predicted the merging of the park-utopia with the large-scale concert as the wave of the future. Didn't happen, of course, in part due to the disastrous concert at Altamont, but Woodstock still became a powerful metaphor for the potential of the peace and love movement. That giant celebration of sensuality and freedom and fun in the summer of 1969 was a radical change from the violence and agitation of the summer of 1968.
We suggest the release of Yellow Submarine in November of 1968 had its impact on the collective unconscious and Pepperland was made manifest at Woodstock. I hope everyone will have the chance to see the Woodstock Bus and pick up on the vibes in person and enjoy a tour of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame afterward. See you there on May 21st!
