The sun's energy is being absorbed by phase changes of melting ice in glaciers and frozen tundra. It takes 80 joules of heat energy to change 1 cubic centimeter of ice at 0 degrees Centigrade into a puddle of water still at 0 degrees Centigrade. All the added heat energy does not change the water's temperature. The heat causes the change from solid to liquid. But if you add another 80 joules of heat energy (which the sun continues to do) our little puddle of water quickly jumps to 80 degrees C.
