Our Prison System Could be so Much Better Were it Not Profit Driven

By and large, capitalism does not support our being a country by, for and of the people. Since the passage of Citizens United, it's become even worse. Our prison-industrial complex profits well off the imprisonment of many. With 4.4% of the world's population we house around 22% of the world's prisoners (2013 statistic). Wikipedia reports that at the end of 2016, about 2,298,300 people were incarcerated out of a population of 324.2 million (0.7% of the population).
